TENS Machines - Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation

They're generaly used for muscle stimulation as excercise for those who've lost control of muscle function. A company here was made apologise for misleading the public into believing they could turn you into Arnorld Swharttzenegger with one.

It's also used to ease pain. No one is certain how but many say it's of benefit. The unit about the size of a deck of cards, sends regular small pulses of electricity to pads you place on your skin with a conductive jelly. These little zaps of electricity stimulate the muscle and or confuses pain messages before they reach the brain.

Hey Macka..

The tens machine works, we used to use it on Davids shoulders and it work for him in reducing the pain. Except when I turned it up instead of down..certainly got a jolt, but he enjoyed it :)

Am looking at using it for myself in reducing some pain (hopefully)

I used one at the rehab facility I was at most recently and it worked well to relieve the back pain I suffer. They are rather expensive from what I gather.

They are meant to releive pain by stimulating sensory nerves. However, if you have pain below lesion then there are concerns about effectiveness and autonomic dysreflexia. Mine was given away. Then I found an electro nut busting post in sci.rutgers.edu to raise the dead.

If you have shoulder pain above leison should work as it does for ABs.

I also had a trial of spinal cord stimulation for cronic pain that was also ineffective. Dr could not get electrode high enough for any theraputic effect. Found silent area way above what I though my level was.
