Finally hubby had Suprapubic inserted

Postby Lush46 » 03 Aug 2012

Hi all,
My hubby had his SP fitted yesterday he is sore but fine or so we thought...4am this morning he has urine coming from the penis making him soaked as well as urine and blood draining into the catheter bag. I phone A&E and was advised to come in. The doctor said it is just the bladder settling....The consultant didn't mention this would/might happen.

Is this common for urine to come though the penis as well as drain into the bag? They said it should settle in a few days.

Thanks

It's not uncommon but obviously not ideal. Sometimes blood clots will block the catheters draining eyelets and urine has nowhere to go but out the urethra. Be aware anytime this happens there is a good chance urine has pushed back up the ureters into kidneys which almost always causes renal infections. Restrict activity to speed the healing process and keep a steady intake of fluids up to avoid such problems.

Wow Graham,
Reading that made me worried. It appears to have stopped coming through the urethra now but the district nurse came yesterday morning to change the dressing and he said he will be back Monday to change it again. I read it should be changed daily. He said best left alone if can be to lessen infections. Well this morning the dressing is bloody so I am going to change and clean it as waiting until Monday seems silly.

Thanks

I don't mean to alarm you Lush but give you the nuts and bolts so you can make informed decisions. Common symptoms of renal (kidney) infections are lethargy, back pain, sweating, headache, cloudy strong smelly urine, disorientation. If these present for more than two or three days have a urine sample tested. It won't hurt to change the dressings yourself as sterile as possible. Sunlight and sterile saltwater are good natural healers. 10 minutes exposure to sunlight daily can aid the supra pubic catheter site healing time quite a bit, and is the only natural source of vitamin D important for healthy bones.

I have had the catheter inserted too far. It lodged against the bladder sphincter causing it to open. Urine flowed out thru the penis, with some drainage thru the catheter. After a day or two of soaked clothes, I returned to my urologist who adjusted it. I was new to this, so didn't know I could tug on it a bit to correct the problem. Don't know if this helps in your situation.

Thanks Bill,
Hubby has been fine with that problem since.

Hope you are getting on with your SP.
